How Memory Fades & Remains

Nude reclining in the back seat of my mind.

That's what I called this oil painted charcoal sketch of a woman on wood.  The image reminds me of something I'd forgotten and start to think about but can not quite recall an actual image memory.

On 2nd thought I may recall she was sketched in Cali and I paint her in Texas. She was painted in a flash &/or flood. I often do not remember how she came to be. I have been thinking about (         ) often as of late.

August Work

Today was moving day for the art again, the first since late July. So I's moving all the works around and I realized, damn, there's one who's never made a show. Well, then.  Here she glows:

This a true hot wax piece, begun & tempered in 100° heat. Straight melted off most the wax more than once as the bird grew her wings and flew. Being so hella hot I didn't want her to go all Icarus on me so I recruited a cover board to tease the sun with thin slips of hot wax.

Went to Houston for a minute & it finally rained while I was gone. The work caught a bird feather and some grit. Gave her a good massage with a rotary sander and oil paint.

She was more avian at inception. Now she's looking more existential octopus.

This little six by six acrylic & spray paint on cassette walk-man & wood was painted back in the day.  Got off of work waiting tables at 4 or 5 in the morning, ready to get things jump started. Back in the day when it was okay to use a lot of acrylic paint, water, spray paint and loud music in the small enclosed space of a rented room. Back in the day was fun. Today I make sure that I have good ventilation and don't ruin the floor.

Good to find a balance. Better to look for a balance and never find a balance. Keep looking, world keeps moving.

Simmering

Dead grass blood on stone, sand in the raw skin, saltwater. Watermelon flesh. Engines expand improbable in the heat yet keep moving anyhow, somehow.

The end of summer (and by the "end" of summer in Texas I mean the breaking of +100° streaks) when it's been hot a good damn long while and rain is a funny concept who lives just around the corner and never visits.

Hand painted encaustic

This was one of my first encaustics, started at North Lake College during one of the several art classes I attended taught by Roberto Mungia (on a panel something like 18 wide by 36 high). This is also one of the few works I've ever only worked a handful of times.

Once to lay down and arrange the paint.  It'd been a real hard day's night and the heat was high.  So it made all sense to create this work only using my hands to move the hot wax.

The second session I only left out in a summer sun long enough to melt just right.

Third time I worked it was a flash fire with gasoline.  Quick & hot to set the surface but not enough for the wax to run.

Carried it around a long time, coast to coast & some. Had to polish it every once again, place it in warm elements when the surface scratched. Left it in Miami.
